COM. LING.- Posiblemente se trate de un compuesto del antropónimo Mantxo seguido de olatz, compuesto a su vez de ola 'cabaña' y del sufijo abundancial -tz(e). MICH. aporta el topónimo Manchola derivado de mantxu 'manco' [AV, nº 484]. En Igal, perteneciente al valle de Salazar, se documenta en el catastro de 1898 el topónimo Manchola [GN DGPL]. Hay también constancia de oicónimos con dicho elemento inicial, como Manchotegui en el país vasco-francés [ORPUSTAN, J.B. OV-4, p. 311], así como MANTXANDIA y MATXATXIPIA (cf. en el capítulo de oiconimia de Ituren). (V. TOTOLATZ en este capítulo). El final -tza se debe probablemente a una metátesis de la -a-, similar a la que encontramos en Aranatz > Arantza o Aiena(t)s > Aientsa, aunque no podemos descartar que la forma actual haya salido de *Mantxólatza, con caída de la vocal postónica, fenómeno habitual en estos pueblos. DESCR.- Amplia ladera con arbolado diseminado de quejigos y robles, tanto autóctonos como americanos, situada en la parte S de ORMATZA y AITZURRA.

OBS.- Quizá de Mantxo, nombre de persona, y olatz (ver en el glosario [OLATZE: Olatze, olatza, es derivado colectivo de ola, y está extendidísimo en la toponimia navarra (cf. por ejemplo los numerosos lugares llamados Olaz, cuyo nombre documentado antiguo es Olatze, y también en esta misma zona Olatzagutia. Significa bien `ferrería' bien `majada'. En esta acepción es curioso el paralelismo del vas. ola y su colectivo olatze, con cast. majada y su colectivo majadal]. ) (TSL).
